1954 Fite Memorial Marathon

Memorial Day At The Shore

Ocean City To Highlight Parade And Race

Ocean City — Memorial Day at Ocean City will be packed with interesting and exciting events. The deeper meaning of the day will be appropriately observed under the joint sponsorship of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Twenty-four distinct units will participate in the colorful parade from the Music Pier to War Memorial Park.

The starting gun for the John E. Fite Marathon Speedboat Classic will be fired from the Ocean City Yacht Club dock at 1 P.M. This important race has become one of the major early season events on the national speedboat calendar and draws some of the fastest boats in the east for the 43-mile gruelling endurance test. Many of the big. Gold Cup class boats do better than 100 miles-per-hour. As a thrilling interlude, the racing program will include a speed demon event with little 48-inchers skimming around the elliptic course in front of the club house.

Memorial Day will also mark the official opening of the bathing season with lifeguards going on duty at the more popular beaches.
